Discovering New Horizons - 1/23/2012 CJ
So far this week I have kept my goal of doing at least one sketch or "doodle" a day, although I did not post an update every night:
This one came to me on my walk to drop off the recycling on Monday. Looking up the old power line posts, their gritty wooden texture and the seemingly chaotic line work dangling any which way, reminded me of the masts of the large sailing ships. Maybe a British colonial clipper, Dutch trader, or Spanish explorer?
And then I pondered the strange similarities of 'currents', information flow, exploration there are between the electronic/ internet grid and the sea travel of old....
A worthy note to a daily doodle!
The next one is a sketch of my husband from the back, watching him study on the laptop.....
Static Emersion - CJ 1/22/2012
This January I've been pondering the self-improvement angle and reflection period of New Year's: But since I've never been big on new year's resolutions, how about new practice exerises? The dilemma of work routines is often that there is hardly any room for creative play-time. After all, we all need to do our respective jobs to keep up the monetary support system - but in order to improve your hand and compositions extra-curricular activities are vital.
Is this double-life hard to keep up? You bet! How often a day do you have a meaningful new point of view, a seriously all-encompassing angle on a familiar subject... AND the time to put it into a sketch or words at the same time? That's why it is so important to experiment without putting yourself under the pressure of discovering/fabricating the ultimate piece of art of the century; hence the focus on the playful aspect.
So far it has become evident that this chore of making a sketch a day or more has at least one unexpected favorable outcome: It is training my eye and mind to look for inspirations in odd places. On walks, while watching TV, or in conversation I now notice funny little things that make me spin off entirely new thought processes for visual depiction.... Others call it daydreaming - I call it shopping for motifs. :)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY 2012!!
